Plans for a Hope and a Future

11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jer 29:11 NIV

This past month very little has gone according to plan. First off I contracted pneumonia on my trip to Europe, and it took me about three weeks to recover. Then, two of our summer camp groups had to cancel last minute unexpectedly which was a blessing in disguise due to my pneumonia and need for recovery. Finally, last week the national forest we are operating on in New Mexico shut down completely due to extreme fire danger. This forced us to radically adjust our programs and hire another guiding service to take our group climbing on private property, something we’ve never had to do in Ascend’s eight year history. Add to that three flat tires in three weeks and I would say it’s been an interesting month. Even with all these challenges we have possessed an overwhelming sense of God’s sovereignty, direction, and provision.

In the book of Jeremiah, the Lord tells his people that He has plans for them, plans for a hope and a future. It’s important to remember that at this time things were not going according to plan for the children of Israel. They were at the beginning of a seventy year exile to Babylon, a foreign and unknown land. They must have been filled with uncertainty and trepidation. Yet in this chaotic and stressful time God reminded them that He was in control, and their future was in His hands.

Whatever you find yourself going through in life may you be reminded that God is in control. Even when our plans completely fall apart, you can have confidence in God’s sovereign loving providence. He has plans to give you a hope and a future.
