He has Overcome the World

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 NIV Last month I had the privilege of travelling to North Africa. I was so blessed to see the Lord move in mighty ways in and through me. I had the opportunity share my faith with multiple people and to encourage others in their faith. Even though the trip was a huge blessing, there were times that it was very difficult. Two years ago when I travelled to the same region, my climbing partners and I attempted a long multi-pitch trad climb in the mountains, and were turned away after getting off route on the first pitch. This year my partner and I returned and were able to complete the entire 1000 ft climb in about 18hrs. It was a long and tiring day, and there were moments that we were tempted to give up, but I was so thankful that the Lord gave us the strength to persevere. This past week in the mountains of New Mexico I found myself on another multi-pitch trad climb with a section that was much more difficult then I anticipated. As our new staff member, Jake, and I climbed, we unexpectedly damaged a rope on the rappel in and had to cut the end off. Once again when the going got tough we were tempted to bail, but as we sat dangling from a hanging belay hundreds of feet in the air, through prayer we found the resolve to continue on. In John chapter 16, Jesus is telling His disciples that he will not be with them much longer as He prepares to go to the cross. They are perplexed and frightened by His declaration and confused as to its meaning. He tells them that in this world they will have trouble, but to take heart. for He has overcome the world. One of the things I love about climbing mountains is that sometimes it can be very difficult. There have been moments when I have been pushed to my limits and had to dig deep beyond myself into the limitless peace of Christ. It is such a great comfort to know that no matter what the world throws at me, my Savior has overcome the world, and through His strength I too can be an over-comer. No matter what circumstances you are facing today, may you find deep peace and reassurance in the knowledge that Jesus has overcome the world!
