No Longer Slaves

God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, even though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Psalm 46:1-2 NKJV

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. I Tim. 1:6-8 NKJV

Fear is a topic that comes up on almost every single one of our trips. We invite our participants to do things that take courage and faith. Many of them have experienced a significant breach of trust in their lives, so stepping out in faith can be a challenge. We get the privilege of confronting real world obstacles with our participants and helping them to overcome them. This gives us the opportunity to talk about their hearts and the fears they face in their walk with Jesus.

This past week preparing to lead worship with our church, I have been struck by these words, “You unravel me with a melody. You surround me with a song, of deliverance from my enemies, till all my fears are gone. I’m no longer a slave to fear. I am a child of God.” Meditating on these words has helped me to recognize some of the fears I still struggle with. Even though it is my calling to help others overcome fear through faith in Jesus, I struggle with fear on a daily basis. Fear of not being good enough, fear of not measuring up to some standard, fear of what the future holds.

It is life-changing to recognize that the Lord meets us in our fears and trying circumstances. He is a very present help in our trouble. He gifts us with a spirit of power, love, and a sound mind. We don’t have to listen to the voice of fear. If we are in Christ we are indwelt by the Holy Spirit, we can listen to His voice and move forward in faith even in the midst of the storm! We no longer have to be enslaved by fear. We have been adopted into the family of God and can walk in freedom as His children and heirs. May God grant you His perspective on the things you fear. May He give you victory over your fear through obedience to His word and trust in His ever-present unfailing love.
